"Caddy smelled like trees" is probably one of the most beautiful phrases in the English language.

Gogol has an ability to describe scenes and characters unlike most authors that I've read. I have zero context to life in Russia circa 1840 and yet I can completely see everything he is describing. Additionally the sarcasm in his writing is so clear and well used. I'm amazed that little seemed to be lost in translation. The story was really captivating due to this great writing style until the end where it got explicitly preachy. Despite that, I would definitely seek out more Gogol works.
