This trilogy takes fantasy writing and makes it credible and enjoyable. Rather than delighting in what is otherwordly, Pullman focuses his attention on the characters and what drives them. They live in a world that is just like ours but subtly different...The same rules do not apply. I read this book, ostensibly a children's series, only a few years ago, and I loved it.
