Nothing new here but as always Ms. Hoyt writes some steamy scenes

Reminds me of a tamer version of Harold Bloom's, Anxiety of Influence. That text frustrated me. This one does not. History of the novel and it's depiction of human nature, the art of the novel and the influence of previous works upon the next. Focuses on world versus national literature, especially the western hemisphere. Very readable thus far. --- Inspires me to read Eastern European literature, Don Quijote and The Sleepwalkers. Would recommend this if you think on high literary terms. How literature shaped philosophy, the arts, and the various components that make up the novel. Shocked that female authors are not mentioned.

Extremely disappointing; a book that wants to be clever, and which only became famous, I think, because a journalist thought that it "spoke for a generation". Bleh. Characters who live boring and pointless lives, in a boring and pointless book.

This is an amazing tale of a true poet and craftsman. Much may still be unknown about this man, but his legacy still lives on through his pottery and words. The illustrations for this book are wonderful and the narrative is just terrific. We were introduced to this book through the Picture-Book club in the Children's Books group here on Goodreads. Although this book didn't win as one of the selections for February 2011 Black History Month, I first heard of it because it was nominated there and I'm very glad that we discovered this book.

One of the most compelling books I have ever read. It fuelled my desire to write.
