This book is an interesting mix: a piece of nonfiction that reads like a novel. Most of the time, I enjoyed that combination, it made exploring the events of the Columbian World's Fair in Chicago quite interesting (a subject that, to me, could be quite dry). As a Chicago expat, I learned quite a few things about my former home. But sometimes it became too "novel-like", as the author would describe thoughts or feeling of some of the characters. This poetic license made for a good read but also made the book seem less factual for me. Mixing the story of such a pivotal point in the history of our nation with the story of a serial killer was also fascinating but curious. I know that Eric Larson had a point to all that, but I'm not sure what it was!

I didn't really enjoy this series, the characters lacked depth and were entirely unsympathetic. It was hard to connect or care about their journey and the plots were predictable and bland.
