This book was so sad.....it reminded me how lucky our dog is to have us. She was born a stray, just like Squirrel. My mom lent me this book--I think she teaches it to her 7th graders. It's a fast, easy read.

This is a wonderful story and it is no wonder that it won an award! The characters and settings are very endearing and the themes are uplifting! I wish more books like these were around when I was young! The use of the word "scrotum," did nothing to take away from this book. Please read the whole book people, before you condemn it for one word that you feel to be inappropriate. Scrotum is the correct scientific term for the male appendage. Lucky is a scientist at heart and her friend's dog is the victim of a snake bite on the scrotum. You will find this out on the first page, so I am hardly giving anything away in terms of plot.
