There is some controversy around this book, which is one of the reasons I wanted to read it. I understand what he's getting at, and I understand why some have issue with the way he gets there. However, there was only one section I would push back on (or question him to determine his ultimate point). I would be cautious, though, as to who I would recommend this to.

I'm not sure that more background about a river runs through it is necessary or helpful, but there are some good essays. especially good is him talking about watching michelson (of interferometer fame) playing billiards at uchicago.
