I don't know what amazes me more about this book--the vast amount of information still existing about Georgiana and her time period through letters, journals, newspapers, and personal papers, OR the way the author was able to sift through that information, organizing it into an fascinating and personable compendium of the Duchess' life. I was constantly surprised at how different, yet similar, life was 200+ years ago. I did listen to the book, and honestly that helped immensely in getting through the somewhat tedious political details. But her personal life was engrossing.

I can't decide if this is more or less disappointing because of how amazing the first part is. If the first part didn't exist would this even be worth three stars? And, conversely, if the first part wasn't soo awesome, would I feel like this was more awesome?

In many ways, this book reminds me of Anna Karenina. There are historical aspects, love interests, views on class and race and general thoughts on life and how different people live it. There is no easy and quick way to sum up a book like this. It is too multi-faceted. The book is written in three parts. It starts in the Civil War. A young man from Vermont is wounded, found by a runaway slave and falls in love. Then, we move on with one of his son's who is determined to get away from the Vermont farm. The story is finished with the son's son, who is looking to lace up the pieces of his history. Well told. Slow moving. Interesting topics. Slightly disappointing (but not bad) ending.

A light, fun beach or airplane read. Nothing requiring too much thought or attention span.

3.5 stars. I really enjoyed this book. The story takes place against the backdrop of a murder mystery, but spends as much time telling the story of what led up to the murder as it did of the investigation itself. Both were told so well, I couldn't put it down. The only beef I had is that the story of the daughter was dropped in the middle, as the story of the doctor took center stage. I wanted more.
