Second favorite book of all time...
As a believer, I found this cultural biography very satisfying. I appreciated how Bushman gave honest commentary as he walked around controversial aspects of the Prophet's history and character, many times showing that the Lord knew what he was doing using an imperfect man in an imperfect environment to carry on his work in unexpected ways. For example, Joseph was raised in a culture and family that believed in supernatural powers and heavenly visitors who led people to treasure. Bushman then makes the point that perhaps such a setting was just what was needed so that Joseph would be believed and supported by his family. Remember, Joseph was shown the plates four times before his heart was right and he was actually allowed to take them and be trusted in fulfilling the purposes of the Lord. This book is not for everyone: details and perspectives swing wide beyond the parameters of what is published by the Church. Also, the text can be quite academically dense at times, some segments of which contain supportive or illustrative details and others, awesome conclusions that demand reread. My personal testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith remains firm and has been greatly enriched by a deeper understanding of the full, round, whole character of this great man. Perhaps it even gives me more hope for the rough rock that I am.
