It’s great that 1984 wasn’t anything like Orwell’s 1984 even for people living in the totalitarian states at the time. The world described by the author would not be able to exist for various reasons I don’t want to spend time elaborating on here. The part of the book explaining how all the things operate in this world just annoyed me. It had many resemblances with what was happening in the Soviet Union at the time and there was a certain amount of fear that similar changes might occur in the other countries. This explains why this book was very popular for decades. The part of the book describing torture and suffering wasn’t enjoyable to read either. Was it necessary to describe all the details? What for? To generate more fear? I can only speculate. On a positive note, I must admit that Orwell is a very good writer. His abilities to show what is happening in someone’s head and create situations of great intensity are phenomenal. There were instances when I really enjoyed reading this book and these were to do with people, their relationships and the uncertainties they were dealing with. I will definitely read some of Orwell’s realistic novels.
