I just finished listening to the unabridged audio book. What a great story. Deborah Harkness has a very visual way of writing that truly puts me in the many places the characters go, and for me that can make or break a book! Her character development is well done, but not overdone and the build up to intense situations is palpable. I am now impatiently awaiting the next book in the series! So if you are looking for a good fiction read about Vampires, Witches, Daemons, magick, action, romance, and adventure in modern times this is a great choice. This is NOT a teen book, this is written for the more mature reader.
This was an important resource for me when I was going through treatment for breast cancer. I read certain chapters over and over. It's written by a doctor who herself was diagnosed and it covers a lot of territory: surgical, radiation, hormonal, and chemotherapy treatment; how treatment will affect your body, your skin, your hair, your teeth; how to handle the stress and mental effects, the importance of exercise and eating well. No book can answer all your questions or tell you the correct treatment for you: that's what doctors, and more importantly, you, are for. But this is a comprehensive and compassionate book.
Like Midwives, Bohjalian writes each chapter from a different person's perspective, which is an interesting approach. I particularly liked the NPR angle, but then I'm an NPR junky.
ADORABLE!
Great series! I enjoyed the whole set. The kids seem real and go through hard challenges. Lots to discuss about freedom and rights, standing up for what you believe, etc.
