I bought this book ages ago and for some reason Have only just got round to reading it, It reminded me very much of Evelyn Waughs A Handful of Dust. The charqacters are not likeable and their behaviour leaves something to be desired but as they fall into a decline not of their own making, you are left feeling sad and sorry for them.

I liked this book. It had some nice messages about love and forgiveness without being too over the top. It makes me want to write a letter to Dix every week, what a beautiful idea.

i was really loving bukowski's fiction (which is truly amazing) but then... wow. fante is terrific. this book is funny and sad and uplifting and heartbreaking, but above all it's more honest and earnest than anything i've read.
