I greatly enjoyed Da Vinci Code. Yet, when someone asks if they should read it, I tell them it depends on their background. I found the book enjoyable because all of my long life I have absorbed non-fiction and documentary works on Holy Grail legends, Knights Templar, Rosicrucians, cipher codes, and general works on Catholicism. Without this background, I think I'd have found the book largely boring. The reference to the symbols here were a delightful interpretation and linking of elements that, in reality, probably have no such link at all. It was brilliantly excecuted. All of which you miss without the background.
