Don't be misled by the cheesy cover illustration - this is a well written historical novel but it does contain romance and apparently the publisher really didn't know where else to place it! There is sound research here and solid writing. This is the story of a 19th. century woman from St. Kilda, one of the western isles of Scotland. She becomes an outcast in her very small island community and eventually lives in London and then on Sanibel Island, Florida. She lives through the loss of her parents, her young husband and then her infant son, but is determined to solve the mystery of the terrible death toll for St. Kilda infants.
Did not grab me. Not worth more review effort.
I read this book after a really powerful man recommended it to me. I was floored by the recommendation and by the book - I thought it did an excellent job of telling a story while revealing history and truth.
See the painting "Carte Blanche" by Rene Magritte.
I read the book, and then watched the movie. The two are very different, and I recommend reading the book first, otherwise the movie is confusing. Hated the ending and felt like it was rushed/didn't match the rest of the book. Otherwise I love Ellis's stream of conscious writing and think this was a great book.
so boring, i even tried listening to it on audio. that became dangerous on the road (nodding off) so i finally buckled down and read it. didnt enjoy it
Such a fun series! I have laughed out loud multiple times with these books. I'm on book four right now, and have loved each one.
