It took a while to read and definitely had it's slow parts, but the pay off at the end was totally worth it!

What an amazing woman - but not surprising once you learn more about her family and the long line of strong, independent women she comes from. This is not just a story about a garden, it's a story about manners, common sense and enjoying life to the fullest. A very nice story which happens to relate life lessons back to gardening.

This book was written in the 40s, but don’t let that stop you. Smith is great and she also wrote The Hundred and One Dalmatians. Aw! The story is about an eccentric, dirt-poor family living in an English castle. The diary is written from sixteen-year-old Cassandra’s perspective, and the purpose of the diary is to teach herself to write—to literally capture the castle. It’s a terrific coming-of-age story as well as a good romance. It made me cry. Enough said.
