While I'm generally a fan of nuclear-holocaust books, I'm not usually over-brimming with appreciation for end-of-the-world books written by Christians. cf [www.raptureletters.com]. Leaving aside the Left Behind comparisons (protagonist a Jewish convert, by the way), this book is awesome--that Miller, an ex-monk himself, could seriously wrestle with questions of recurring violence without regurgitating either blind optimism or original sin still impresses me a great deal. There's an unfinished sequel, written after Miller left Catholicism; I haven't yet read it.
Another great book by Diana Gabaldon!
Interesting story line. I liked the characters and really felt for them. It's more of a story about the effects of war on families than Madeline.
