Must have been highly entertaining before the Web came about, but feels a little outdated now. Still an interesting concept, though.

Demille is like a conspiracy theorist who takes real life events involving trajedies such as 9/11 etc. and gives the reader a novel that mixes fiction and intrigue. I have a hard time puting his books down once I start. I think I have read them all to date. The Gold Coast and The Charm School are my personal favorites.

Quirky, interesting characters.

I've been a John Irving fan for a long time, but this one wasn't my favorite. I stuck with it because I wanted to know what happened in the end, but the fact that it took me a whole week to read should tell anyone who knows me that the book wasn't a slam dunk for me. If you're going to read him, A Prayer For Owen Meany is always an excellent choice. Having said all of that... Irving always sets up an interesting premise (boy and his father go on the lam after an unfortunate accident at a logging camp) and writes great characters. So... the jury is out.

I've always hated this book and the message it sends. That never satisfied boy takes and takes and takes all the tree is willing to give and at the end comes back to sit on her stumpy carcass. A good example of how a child should not treat his mother.

I think this is the best of *all* the detective fiction genre, hands down. But it's much more than that. It's true poetry, intrigue, gorgeous vintage California, noir satisfaction, and more more more. Chandler's greatest work.
