** spoiler alert ** I enjoyed this so much more than the 1st, maybe because these messed up mother/daughters that refused to listen to each other seemed to FINALLY talk and get their issues with each other worked out. It is weird that in the 1st book I couldn't stand Marta, but sort of related to Hildemara. It was just the opposite in this book, Hildie was the pain and Marta seemed to accept things. Marta never tried to take Hildies place with Carolyn, but Hildie resented her for coming in and helping when Hildie was sick. I felt really sorry for Carolyn and her getting molested by the neighbor, since Hildie didnt want to spend any time with her. All 3 women (Marta, Hildie and Carolyn) seemed to favor their boys more than their girls, as they wanted to "give them wings and push them". And it backfired on them. I wondered if this was why Hildie felt the need to spoil Dawn so much, since she felt that her mother slighted her. It was sad that Dawn had to die, but it helped in bridging the gap that these women had with each other. 2 of the generations named a child a weird names, Marta had Clotilde and Hildemara, then Carolyn named hers May Flower Dawn, which I tended to agree with the grandparents, it was a hippy name. After reading the authors story, I realized how she took a lot of her experiences with her mother and grandmother and blended it into the novel. I also liked her personal photos and loved the questions at the end, they really make you think. Besides Dawn dying, I felt really wrapped things up better. I think it is necessary to read the first novel to really get this one.
