The plot summary intrigued me, but I found so many issues with this story. One, it took me forever to read but I plodded through hoping it would get better. I felt the story took too long to begin and once the characters, place and plot were finally established I wasn't interested in what happened to them. I was curious enough though to keep reading because I kept thinking that something had to happen, but in the end it never really did. Even when she is taken away at the end and you read the epilogue you never know exactly what happens and what may have changed. The writing was an interesting choice as I found I had a hard time getting used to the narrator/character/no dialogue setup of telling the story and often times I had to go back and read what I'd just read. One thing that bothered me about this book was the thought process that women were being subjected to the evils of the world, but how with this new system were they being saved? Essentially they're surrogates, but with no choice and no freedoms so how in the world is that a better option for women? Also, for their so-called act of saving/freeing women, they still end up with a "brothel" for the Commanders! The only thing positive about this book I can say is that it got me thinking and it got me worked up. If anything, this story will inevitably stick with me which I think good or bad any writer would enjoy that fact.

I read this book every summer from my 7th grade year through high school it seemed. It was the first book that I totally loved and changed the way I looked at life. To this day, one of my all time favs.

A well-written story of a woman who gets to know a legendary rock star who faded from the public eye many years before. The story isn't entirely "gumdrops and lollipops", which I enjoyed as it feels a bit more realistic and less ideal than a typical love story.
