Upon re-reading this as an "adult", I am struck hard by what a genius Salinger was. Holden is honestly one of the most real characters I've ever read and the fact that an adult can remember and so accurately describe the emotional turmoil of what it's like to be a teenager amazes me. It brought tears to my eyes more than once because along with the story it brought back those same emotions that I used to experience SO strongly when I first read and identified with this book when I was 15 or 16. It was like a freight train hitting me with a crash of "how I used to feel all the time". I am very glad to no longer have the emotions of a teenager, but I am also glad that I can still remember how they felt.
