One thing I like about this book is that it catholic in its details without resorting to an obsessive cataloguing of them into footnotes or appendices. This actually spurred me to look up references which I didn't understand, which I haven't done in a really long time, and which was a nice feeling. The last time I did that for a book, was probably pre-ubiquitous-internet and the things I was looking up were probably for a class. This is not actually a very distinctive feature, historically of a book and just means I read too much jumbled pop-culture literature. I also think the cover with the silhouette of the children playing and the boat floating on a sea of smoke is beautiful.
