Highly enjoyable! In the style of Gladwell and the importance of Feeling Good, this one's destined to be a classic.
My sister gave this book to me for Christmas, and after intensive reading of various anthropological papers and texts, I finally decided I needed to read something fun and relaxing. I quickly discovered that though this 200+ page book is written for "young adults" or "teens", it's a very thought provoking, in a laid back way. Every other chapter describes a type of parasite and its biological or evolutionary function, which is right up my ally being a student of evolution. The clever discussion of how a vampire like disease would actually effect people makes up for the some times cheesy character interactions. The story ties together some basic historic events, biology, and fantasy ideas to make a clever and believable story that excited me to the very end. At the conclusion of the book, Scott Westerfeld includes a bibliography, which includes at least one book I think is a must read for anyone who wants to be educated in the sciences of today, Darwin's Orignins of Species. Check Peeps out. It's a fast read, informative and fun.
