My first thoughts about this novel were that the narrator was a gratingly annoying narcissistic megalomaniac and I wanted him to overdose immediately. I gave it a few chapters and decided to accept the humor of the story for what it is. By the end of the novel, I appreciated Thompson's ability to make me so hate a character and still find him funny. Probably the greatest value of this work is the scathing critique of sober American culture at large. The passages where two insanely high men are treated with kid gloves to maintain relative normalcy are laugh out loud funny.
