An interesting subject. Vanderhaeghe is a masterful writer, but his unique style makes it hard to understand his meaning. There are too many images within one sentence so that it loses its impact. The brown shirts blowing on a clothes-line seems simple, yet it wasn't. The brown shirts are in fact soldiers wearing brown shirts and they aren't on land as you'd assume by the clothes-line idea, they are on a ship. Each paragraph is full of these confusing images.
