This is the first of three fat books. I finished it and said, "That wasn't worth the bother..." but spent the next year+ wondering what would happen next. I finally finished all three of them just because I kept wanting to turn the page. I hope I haven't warped my understanding of history.

Carl Sagan is just a wonderful, wonderful human being. The novel is every bit as excellent as the Jodie Foster film and then some. What's most appealing to me is that the novel goes deeper into the mathematics--sounds geeky and terrible, I know. But it isn't. If you liked the film, this is a must-read. It's way up there, probably somewhere in my top ten favorites.

My Jim is this year's selection by the Seattle Public Library for the "everyone reads the same book" thing. It's a telling of Jim's story from Huckleberry Finn told in the voice of Jim's wife, Sadie. It's a story of resilience, isolation, control, heirtage, and profound loss. Also, about the unrealized promises of freedom.
