Louisiana teen Rory Deveaux decides to spend her senior year in a London boarding school while her parents teach at a university in another large city across the country. At first, the story focuses on the usual adjustment and making friends issues that are expected when the protagonist is a new girl from the United States. But Rory is blessed with a cool roommate who shares many of her own habits and tastes, and they connect quickly. Her arrival coincides with the first in a series of murders that seem quite similar to the Jack the Ripper murders back in 1888. Suddenly, London is in a panic, and everyone waits to see when the killer will strike again. Rory is drawn into the mystery when she sees a man that no one else sees. Could it possibly be the murderer's ghost? There's a lot to like in this book with its Ripper connections and interesting characters, but things went awry for me over Rory's ability to see and communicate with ghosts and the existence of the secret ghost police. Some plot lines are tied up far too neatly and conveniently for me while others are left wagging in the breeze. Rory's promising, interesting personality gets lost in all the complications of the Ripper investigation, which disappointed me.
