This is the most singular and comprehensive guide to Conservative halachah available. It's also, as far as I'm aware, the only comprehensive guide to Conservative halachah. In some places it shows its age and the structure of the book leaves something to be desired. Nevertheless it is an indispensable reference. I hope that in time it will spawn a couple of commentaries that maintain its relevance.
This is one of the books that every human being should read in their lifetime. No other book is more profound or searing as DuBois' evaluation of the problem between the color line. It is both challenging and heart-breaking. Though we have made progress since the dawn of the twentieth century, we still have a long way to go. I would recommend this book not only to those interested in issues of race, but also anyone interested in American culture and society as a whole. It is a telling book that shows where we have come from as a society, and where we should be heading.
For parents and teachers especially this is a tremendous work. It has been a real eye opener and the changes ones perspective about a lot of things but education in particular. Gladwell shows you how success is reached in many different fields. He reveals that hard work is important but not the only thing that matters. Reading this will change the way you parent and teach.
Good insight into management consulting world. Vivid narratives. Easy reading.
I first read this book in high school, and found it serendipitously on the remainder table at Odyssey Books yesterday. A fine book of poetry that makes me feel. Favorite poems: The Attic, Practicing, Beth, The Girl, The Copper Beach, A Certain Light. Key themes in this collection of poetry: her father's sexual abuse of her, her family dynamics, her brother's death by AIDS. This could be written as a warning, but it is not - I cannot imagine that someone would not enjoy this book, and feel (perhaps even uplifted, but at least connected) from reading it. MM
