the only thing keeping you from reading ulysses is fear. you can read it and take it uber seriously and track down all those literary references and hack away at those symbols and colors for hours if you want. or you can read it and simply take in the sensation of reading it. you can read it just for the word play. it's a museum of the english language and of the novel. and by museum i mean that joyce lays it out all in front of us, past glimpses of literary history, along with suggestions of where we could go with the english language in the future. but ultimately, i believe he gives the reader a hell of a lot of freedom in terms of what they think about and appreciate in the story. i don't know. there is no such thing as sense in his story, but there are senses. see more. affirm life. his words are always celebratory though, and observant, and fucking playful, and i love it.
