When I first read this book a long time ago, I thought it was actually based on historical documents. Of course, the truth is that Crichton just used the fictionalized "historical documents" as a device to help draw you in to this book, and it works very well. I do not know how this compares with the movie of the same name, as I can only slightly remember the movie... but my memories of the book are vivid so it must have been better.
