Okay, when I started this book, I did not like it at all. I didn't like the author's deliberate writing style. There are very few subtleties to her writing - just when she'd make a beautiful analogy or a funny joke, she'd go on to explain it, ruining the "wordsmithery" of the entire moment (kidding - I know its not a word). I stuck with it, however, and became pretty attached to the author and her journey. Gilbert is a pretty cool woman, and it was fascinating to see her change throughout the book - as if she were a friend I was watching grow. I marked many passages in the book as passages to which to return - espcially passages about having a guru (I really want one now), struggles with meditation and trying to quiet her mind, and criticisms about her inability to have boundaries with men. Her time at the Ashram in India was fascinating - definitely my favorite part. I really like the way she characterized her experiences with god, meditation, self doubt and eventually self love. It was wonderful to watch her grow into a stronger self. I had low expectations about the Indonesia section of the book, but again, I was engrossed in her journey and so proud of her for being able to trust and love again. She is a very interesting woman whose journey was a lesson to me. And as it turns out, I liked her writing style! She's certainly no Gabriel Garcia Marquez or even a Zadie Smith, but she's witty, sarcastic, perhaps a bit self-indulgent, and in the end, a pretty enlightened individual.
