I really liked the book even though the story line was really predictable. However, the author has no respect for marriage, virtue, or chastity. Both this book and Graceling contradict morals and values that I hold sacred. I don't think I would recommend this book to anyone who wasn't married or already firm in their standards.

Outdated and conceptually flawed.

This is like the "literary" version of Xanax: makes you feel pretty good though you can't exactly put your finger on the reason why and even though it probably kills more than a few brain cells it's good for what ails you. That being said, loved it! I certainly hope that this is not the end of Becky Brandon (nee Bloomwood).

** spoiler alert ** I won this book through Goodreads First Reads. :-) When I first read the synopsis of this book, it reminded me of The Talking Eggs by Robert D. San Souci. In that book, there are two sisters, one lazy and one hardworking. They both help an old woman and get a reward; the hardworking sister breaking open eggs to get dresses and diamonds, while the lazy sister breaks her eggs to get snakes and toads. It was one of my favorite children's books. In Toads and Diamonds, both sisters have their faults, though not huge faults by any means, but both the gifts bestowed by the goddess Naghali have a reason for being there. I really enjoyed the way the story carried on, especially Diribani's wanting to help others with her diamonds and other stones and Tana's doing what she could for the villagers when she saw them basically kidnapped. Each sister had to figure out why they were chosen to speak either diamonds or snakes and it tested their faith while they were bestowed with the gift. Although it took a while for each sister to see that the goddess gave them these gifts to help her followers, they both grew up during their separation from each other. It was great to see both points of view of each of the sisters as the chapters progressed. I would definitely recommend this book!

Cute and fluffy, but not much there. A kittenbook.
