I truly loved the balanced authenticity of this book - a really nice pairing of the happy and tragic, the intellectual and physical, the serious and playful. All the characters and relationships seemed real. I didn't find the plot particularly compelling, or even very special compared to a lot of other YA historical fiction I've read. I understand what the Grace Brown story lent the novel thematically, but those portions still seemed clumsily tacked-on to me. The women's empowerment message was unfortunatly heavy-handed.
It wasn't as good as the Maze Runner, but still had me hooked. It takes a little while to get into, but once you do it's worth it. Definitely recommend it to sci-fi readers.
