Just finished this and I loved it. If you can get past the writing device of convenient coincidence then it's a fabulous chance to eavesdrop on the lives of a group of people connected through a small apartment building in San Francisco. It took me a few pages to get into it but then it was as addictive as the best soap... but with better writing and a definite 70s flair. I want to keep reading the series and am wondering how I'm going to read other things in the meantime. I want to know what happens next!
A rather old fashioned read maybe but packed with facts and accounts about the Boxer rebellion and those at the receiving end of the violence and attacks. It was a little hard going at times, perhaps I was expecting a less dry tone, but it was none the less an important read in my exploration of Chinese history.
I'm givign this book a three, mostly because it confused me.
