Why NOT go from a psychological healing book to a live production of Les Miserables (WOW!) to a book about a hermaphrodite; I mean, really?! I am interested to see if they can sensitively, entertainingly, and inoffensively cover this topic. We shall see. I love the author's voice. Amazing writer! I wish about 3/4 of the way through was a little less risque. I still enjoyed the book and am not sorry I finished it, but would not recommend for the sensitive, conservative reader.

Read this mainly on the banks of the reservoir in Nederland, CO... breath-taking once I got into it... and one of the final causes not to "believe" anymore. Very powerful characters when I read it; at the time I felt Greene was one of the greatest novelists. Later I read two other books of his (The Human Factor and End of the Affair) and they felt adolescent and melodramatic. I haven't re-read P&G for fear I'd feel the same way; on the other hand it may be more enduring and classic. It is an INCREDIBLE story of a hunted, haunted priest during the Mexican revolution -- amazing character development.
