Well-paced saga of a high school kid whose cleverness allows him to play David against the Goliath of a sinister mega-corporation as the world competes to solve a global scavenger hunt puzzle. Catnip for nerds and geeks, this book takes place simultaneously in the future and the past: events occur in 2044, but the culture of 2044 obsesses on pop culture from the 1980s. Pretty much a "must read" if you were a fan of the early days of video games and still recall fondly your hours spent with an Atari 2600, text adventure games, coin-op classics such as Centipede and Tempest, or even 8-bit home console games. There is still an enjoyable story here if you're not a nerd, but the hundreds of pop-culture references will be wasted on you, and you'll probably feel there are no stakes for the characters. Personally, I devoured it over a weekend. My wife is pretty hip but she wouldn't read it. BTW, this has only been out one week as I write this, and Warner Bros. is already making a movie of it.
