Marillier is a wonderful storyteller, whose greatest gift (from the two books of hers I've read) seems to be her ability to create intriguing and compelling characters. And though I enjoyed this book, it was too long, with too many unnecessary twists and turns to the plot. She had a wonderful story with rich characters, but at times seemed too get too caught up in their world to stick to the simplicity of her tale. Also, she is much better when she hints at her themes than when she has characters speak them . . . it has a way of ruining the beauty of them. Still, I am happy to read anything by her now.
