East of Eden is slightly better than The Grapes of Wrath, but not by much. I am always perturbed to reach the halfway point of a book and have the plot start over. Sure, that was probably the point, but Steinbeck's penchant for suffocating description does not lend itself to retelling the same tale in a single novel.
