I read this book about 11 or 12 years ago. I loved it then and I love it now. I KNOW these women. Hell, I am one of these women! From the first few pages of laughing out loud, to the very end, I cried, laughed, wondered, and really related to the YaYas. Being from the Gulf Coast, I felt really connected to them. The places, sounds, smells, even the habits, (turning over a pillow to connect with the cool side of it) felt familiar. The movie did not do the book justice. One should read the book.

your typical boarding school novel, though it more accurately portrays campus and dorm life than others. the protagonist is hard to identify with, perhaps because she seems aimless throughout most of the novel.

I think I found a new author to read! A 10 year old murder thought to be solved. A loner detective accused of killing a child survivor of a boat massacre and running off with money and evidence. 10 years later, another loner detective, figures out the pieces of the puzzle don't quite fit as people would like them to fit.

My sixth graders love this story of Cole, a boy with oppositional-defiance issues, who severely injures a high school classmate. As his sentence, Cole chooses to experience Native American Tribal Justice instead of a traditional juvenile justice program, which essentially means he must survive on an island off the coast of Pacific Northwest for a year on his own. This survival fiction story has enough realistic fiction elements to keep even those who do not typically like survival fiction sitting on the edge of their seats.
