A monster calls is not the book I thought it was going to be. It was sooooo much more. Poignant beyond belief, his words cut me like a knife. I was ever so glad I decided to finish this in the dead of night without the glare of other's eyes, so I could cry in earnest on my own. And boy did I cry. Not just because of the story - it was definitely worth the sorrow, but because of how beautiful this book was written. How you could feel right down to your soul the anguish that this child had buried so deep - so completely, that is would surface as the monster it was. I won't go into the plot - that would ruin the book for anyone else I think. I will marvel at the writing though. As moving as it was, I loved, loved, loved how Patrick Ness wove the inner dialogue with the outer reality so that there were times it was hard to tell which was which and how you could actually feel the physical movement when one slammed shut and the other began. It was mesmerizing to me, and I found each time it happened - and you knew when it was happening - it still would slam into me. Fantastic. Truly this is no more a child's book or a young adult's book than saying oatmeal for breakfast is - it's so silly to segregate it like that. It's for the child in all of us, for even though we age and become adults, we still always have an inner child. And that child often has hurts too big to talk about. Highest possible recommendation on this book. Please read it! And keep some tissues handy. You won't regret it.
