This book is called If I Stay by Gayle Forman and it’s about a girl Mia who has a very important decision between life and death (literally!). Mia is a girl who is about to go to college. She has a younger brother (Teddy), two loving parents, a best friend Kim, and an amazing boyfriend, Adam. Mia is forced to go into a coma. As she hovers outside her body, she decided if she wants to stay alive or leave her new-orphaned life. This book is great if you like books with a huge climax (the ending is the best part). I would recommend this fiction book to all young adults!
Demick was a news corespondent stationed in Seoul and this book is her extended interviews with 6 North Korean defectors living in South Korea. Why I started it: The library recently purchased the audio book and I snatched from the shelf, because it had been recommended both by family and friends and was on the professional reading list for soldiers stationed in Korea. Why I finished it: This is engaging, horrifying and enlightening story was well suited for an audio book. At times, I had to pause the story to process the feelings of horror, pity and sympathy but I would always jump back in, to find out what happened next. Note: Other reviewers have pointed out that this is an extremely biased sample set of what is happening in North Korea and that it is mostly about the 1990s and not what is currently happening in the country. That's all true. But this is a great introduction to many Americans, who only know North Korea as that rogue state that's developing nuclear weapons. This is a great book to introduce you to North Korean attitudes, experiences and history.
