Loved this book. The idea is that North America had it's own magical spirits and beings (the Cousins, who are part animal and can take animal form) and when Europeans came the Faeries came along too, pushing the cousins out as the people took over the wilderness. And being as they are all rather immortal there's a lot of tension there. Jilly, caught in the crossfire ends up being sucked into a part of the Otherworld created by the fears whe had as an abused kid and has to deal with her past. Um, and those themes really do go together somehow in the book. There's lots more going on and a bit of romance. Good times.
