G. Willow Wilson nimmt den Leser mit auf ihre persönliche Reise in ein unbekanntes Land, eine fremde Kultur und eine Religion, von der man viel hört, aber wenig weiß. Nachdem sie während des Studiums zum Islam konvertierte, möchte sie nun für einige Zeit in einem muslimischen Land leben, ohne wie im Amerika nach dem 11. September 2001 wegen ihrer Religion auf Unverständnis und Ablehnung zu stossen. Sie geht nach Kairo um an einer amerikanischen Schule als Lehrerin zu arbeiten und lernt dort den Mann kennen, mit dem sie ihr Leben verbringen will. Aus der faszinierenden Sicht einer zum Islam konvertierten religionslosen Amerikanerin werden Land, Menschen und der Islam beschrieben. Unterschiede zu westlichen Gewohnheiten im alltäglichen Leben wie Einkaufsmöglichkeiten, Verhaltensregeln oder Sichtweisen werden aus ihrer Perspektive in kleinen, teils amüsanten, teils interessanten Anekdoten erzählt. Nicht immer kann man Willow Wilsons Argumentation nachvollziehen, wenn sie zum Beispiel die wenig öffentliche Rolle der Frau im Islam als Ausdruck des Schutzes dessen, “was einem am liebsten ist”, beschreibt und verteidigt. Auch fand ich ihre Gründe sich für ein Leben als Muslimin zu entscheiden etwas zu vage. Trotzdem erhält man einen reflektierten Einblick in das Leben in einer muslimischen Gesellschaft. Kairo Sunset wird jedem Leser gefallen, der sich für die Welt hinter den Nachrichtenmeldungen interessiert und sich in eine uns in der Regel unbekannte Welt entführen lassen möchte.

This book was a lot better than I was expecting. As I was reading it, I was thinking that I wasn't going to like it. I'm surprised with how engrossing the story was, it was moderately paced but I found myself eagerly anticipating the outcome. The basic plot is that the wife of a pilot learns that her husband's plane has exploded off the coast of Ireland and that there are no survivors. While dealing with all the initial shock of his death, she also has to contend with the reaction and grief of their 15 year old daughter, and the media frenzy the goes along with a crash of this nature. She learns that the media and the investigators are saying that it was suicide. In an effort to prove to everyone that Jack would never commit suicide as well as murder all those passengers, she learns that her husband had many secrets from her and is not the man she thought he was for all those years together. I could definitely sympathize with Kathryn's situation. She was married to her husband for 16 years and he was living a complete double life. She will never get the answers, never find out why, she simply had to find out and deal with it which is not the easiest thing to do. I was not necessarily thrilled with the ending but I do think that the author captured Kathryn's grief and the tension between her and her fifteen year old. I would definitely recommend the story, it was sad and emotional journey but it was thankfully it went by quickly and remained fairly interesting throughout.
