i got this book from the library when my mother-in-law was in hospice at our home. my daughter was 3 years old, and i was looking for a way to tell her that her grandmother was dying. this is a beautiful, true story about a young boy (tomie) and his relationship with a grandmother (nana downstairs) and a great-grandmother (nana upstairs). i cried as i was reading it, and my daughter would lean over and pat my hand and say, "it's ok, mommy. don't be sad." i bought this book because i had to own it. i have read it a hundred times since, but i still get choked up.
