The first in a series of books set in Botswana, Africa, this is a charming tale of one woman's foray into the detective business. Mma Ramotswe, a traditional woman who takes great pride in the high marks she achieved in secretarial school, is the protagonist. It does not take long for the reader to realize that her character and skills go far beyond that simple (to us) accomplishment, as she solves cases in the most insightful and entertaining ways. But for me, the best thing about this series is the deceptively simple prose of Alexander McCall Smith, whose words simply transport you to Botswana and the Number 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. You can practically smell the dry earth, and smell the bush tea that Mma brews at the end of the day. I would compare his prose style to watercolors, where clarity and light prevail.
