This book is very thought provoking-is is OK to have a child to try to save another one's life? It also had a surprise ending.

The Dryden translation is far superior to any other I've seen. It's more fun to read, and it's more exciting. I don't get why anyone would prefer Fitzgerald. Beverly and I started with Fitzgerald, stopped, started again, switched to Dryden. Now we are enjoying it. The story Virgil tells is wonderful and deserves its reputation. It's easy to see why an opera was written on the story of Dido and Aeneas. Dryden's version begins: Arms and the man I sing. Fitzgerald begins: I sing of warfare and a man at war. Come on! Which sounds better? Which is more eloquent? Yet I bought the Fitzgerald based on numerous glowing recommendations which never mentioned Dryden. HELP! 7.23.13 Beverly and I finished it today. It's a far superior book to the Iliad. Once again, I have a very different feeling after reading and finishing this book. Classics are there for a reason. They challenge and enrich us in ways few other things do. It is not an easy read. Lots of names, for one thing, and lots of allusions for another. It's a GREAT read though.
