The beginning of the book is quite slow; the author uses an extraordinary amount of unfamiliar terms without giving much explanation, making it very difficult to become involved with the story. The prologue is ripe with ridiculous similes: you may be amused by the image of a door opening being likened to a pair of lips and a hot breath! However, if you get past the first few pages, to where Tedla starts telling the story, things perk up immediately. You're then treated to a fascinating view of alien cultures, slavery and oppression, gender issues, abuse, information economies, and more. The strongest point of the novel has to be the descriptions of each culture, each being entirely distinct and well-thought out. The book left me with one question, though: just what did Tedla do which marked it down for being a bland?
