If you read anything by Virginia Woolf, be sure to read this one! While the presence and absence of the magnetic and charming Mrs. Ramsey effectively bookend the novel, the central character is actually her wallflower houseguest Lily Briscoe. As she spends her time observing the family and painting, she embarks on a metaphorical trip to the lighthouse that serves as the promised but unfulfilled destination to the Ramsey children. In particular, Virginia Woolf beautifully captures the passage of time in this book--the rise and descent of a thrown ball, the seasons of neglect that fall upon the Ramsey's summer beach house, the ebb and flow of a dinner party.
