One of the best autobiography books I have ever read. It is about Ji-li Jiang's experience during the Cultural Revolution in China that started from the year of 1966. Before the Cultural Revolution, Ji-li's life was as perfect as it can be. Her classmates admired her and she is also a straight A student. Her family is very supportive of her in everything that she does. However, that all changed when Mao Ze-Dong launched the Cultural Revolution which twisted Ji-li's life around. Her and her family suffered during this time period because Ji Li finds out later that her grandfather was a landlord. This clearly labeled her family and herself on the black list. Her and her family had tried many ways to keep their status a low profile. However, her classmates knew about her status and kept on humiliating her and her family. And later on Ji-li has to decide whether to be part of Chaiman Mao's revolution or to stay behind with her bad status with her family. It is not a historical reading but more of a story of Ji-li's events during the Cultural Revolution. Throughout the novel I could always feel what she feels in every situation. Even though I have never experienced what she experienced but by reading it, you are able to understand what she could have felt during that time. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in someone who lived through the Cultural Revolution. For me, I kept on flipping the pages as it gets more and more interesting, wondering what is going to happen to her and her family next...
