The most heartbreaking novel about any country that has ever written. From the sufferings of the individual characters to the overarching plot of the change and fall (not that it wasn't already dark) of Japan, Autumn Bridge is a masterful lament to the sorrow of Nihon. Told in multiple narratives that are take place over 600 years, the story weaves parallels of life and death of its characters with the same demise of Japan. I cried. A lot.
Excuse the trashy cover, but Madeleine Brent is the BEST EVER.
I spent more time avoiding this book than I did reading it, for fear it was just going to be too sad, to much. All I will say is that I am so impressed with the voice and the perspective and the characters in this book, and it was so much more than I expected.
