This is on my to-read list, although Ive read it before (about 10 years ago). It really spoke to me at that time of my life, and I want to read it again- but I want to read it with somebody else so I can discuss it. Any takers? I remember being absolutely bowled over by Kundera's musings on the precarious nature of corporeal existence- the fact that we are thrown into this world as actors on a stage, "rehearsing" for a role that will only be played once- desparately trying to get it right on the first time, and at times failing miserably. Kundera somehow manages to capture that liminal feeling where ennui transforms itself into joy, terming it the "unbearable lightness of being." That is, that the sadness and futility of our existence is unbearable, but at the same time the very essence of that "unbearableness" (for lack of a better term) is what motivates us to take risks and experience the true happiness of being alive. So, yeah. I guess you could say I kind of liked it. Would love to see what you all think. Postscript: Reread May 2007 in a single sitting on a flight to NYC. Still kicks ass.
