I'm pretty sure I didnt "get it". Also my ereader was playing up, so I was in no mood to analyse scenes for hidden meaning. I may reread it another day.

In both of his other books and this one, Ondaatje shifts the time of the story. Sometimes I like this, but in this book I didn't. This time, it was too hard to see the connections between events that might be more than a hundred years apart. His characters are as vivid as ever, but it seemed more like two or even three different books. Maybe I'm just not smart enough to have enjoyed it.
